Chapter Twenty-Seven

“Sir!” someone yells from beyond the walls. “Sir, it’s urgent!”

Jace groans and releases his gentle touch on my chin. “Come in.”

I briefly glance up to the wall to find Tucker and Levi both scowling at Jace. Their expressions look almost jealous, and a thin trail of icy mist coils from Levi’s nostrils. When they see me looking at them, though, they snap out of it, both occupying themselves by glancing over the walls at things I can’t see.

I frown, wondering what’s gotten into them.

A soldier in a black and yellow uniform stops just beyond the gate, breathless, and salutes. “A shifter just crossed the border solo. He’s headed here now.”

Back straightening slightly, Jace frowns and briefly glances toward me. In that moment, it seems like we share the same thought.

Have I already been discovered?

If so, he needs to have a chat with his people about keeping secrets.

Jace sets his hand on the small of my back and ushers me toward the gate as he continues prodding the soldier for more info. “Who is it?”

“We’re not sure, sir. No one recognizes him yet, but we can guess the family he’s from.”

The soldier lifts his eyebrows, frowning, and it seems to be some silent clue. Even though I miss the deeper meaning of the exchange, Jace shakes his head in frustration. “Damn it.”

“What?” I subtly shift as I walk, doing my best to avoid his touch so that I can focus instead of losing myself in the sparks his fingers send through me. “Who is it?”

“Let’s not get riled up until we know for sure.” Jace jogs off, so I nod a quick farewell to Levi and Tucker as I follow him and the soldier.

We race up a flight of stairs, weaving through hallways as we bolt toward a high balcony at the front of the embassy. It overlooks the courtyard and gives us a decent view of the long and winding road leading up to the bridge.

As Jace leans against the stone railing, shoulders tense, his glare focused on the road, I wonder if this is where he stood as I drove up.

Seconds later, a flashy red sports car speeds along the road, the top down as the convertible races toward the gate. I can’t see much from this distance, just a man with broad shoulders and dark hair, one arm casually resting over the empty passenger seat as he effortlessly steers the car at breakneck speed.

“Damn it,” Jace says, smacking his fist against the rock. It crumbles beneath his hand, nothing but pebbles and dust, and I’m left wondering just how much of my magic is indeed similar to his.

Quite a few walls now have been crushed to pebbles under my fist since I discovered this dragon magic, and it seems thunderbirds possess similar power and strength even in their human forms.

Good to know.
